APA Dissertation/ Thesis Abbreviation Rules

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments ·

Writing a dissertation or thesis in APA styles requires keeping to certain rules. These rules apply to writing abbreviations as well. That is why we have decided to present you the main rules of making abbreviations in APA style.

  • Explain the meaning of abbreviation in your APA dissertation/ thesis if it occurs for the first time;
  • Do not explain what the abbreviation means in case it is commonly used as a word (IQ, ESP, LSD, etc.);
  • Avoid acronyms except for familiar and long terms (MMPI);
  • Do not use outside parenthetical comments the following abbreviations: e.g. (use for example), etc. (use and so forth), viz. (use namely), cf. (use compare), vs. (use versus);
  • Single-space when using abbreviation within a reference (p. 12, 3rd ed.);
  • Do not single-space within the organization titles or degree titles (MA, PhD);
  • Do not make use of periods within measurements (ft, s, lb,). Exception: inch (in.);
  • Use “m” for meter and s for second;
  • Add s without any apostrophe for making a plural form of abbreviations (PhDs, Eds, MAs);
  • Do not use ending s for measurements if you want to make a plural form of it (50 seconds is 50 s);
  • Use “pp.” instead of single p if you want to refer to several pages;
  • Make use of two-letter postal codes for U.S. state names;
  • Do not use pp. for journals or magazines citations. It is preferable to give the numbers themselves.

These are the main rules of making abbreviations in APA dissertation/thesis. Follow them to format your APA dissertation/thesis abbreviation correctly.
